Which arithmetic operation fits the situation?
Addition combines amounts; subtraction removes an amount or finds a difference. Multiplication counts equal groups; division finds the number of groups or the size of each.
| Situation | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 3 bags of 4 | 3 × 4 | 12 marbles |
| 12 shared into 3 bags | 12 ÷ 3 | 4 in each |
| 12 with 4 removed | 12 − 4 | 8 marbles |
One worked example
- 3 × 4 = 12Three equal groups of four: 4 + 4 + 4.
- 12 ÷ 3 = 4Three bags receive equal amounts. Division reverses multiplication.
- 12 − 4 = 8Remove one bag containing four marbles.
Watch out: Order matters for subtraction and division: 12 ÷ 3 is not 3 ÷ 12. Division by zero is undefined.
