PEAZIT Aha card

The cell: a small unit with shared jobs

Go straight to resources ↓

A cell is a basic structural and functional unit of life. Its structures work together; the membrane separates inside from outside and regulates exchange.

A simplified model of a typical animal or plant cell.
StructureMain role
MembraneBoundary and regulated exchange
CytoplasmLocation of many cellular processes
NucleusHolds most of the DNA
MitochondriaContribute to cellular respiration and ATP production

One worked example

  1. An animal cell has a membrane.A membrane is not the same as a cell wall.
  2. A plant cell also has a membrane. It also has a cell wall outside the membrane.
  3. Cells in green plant parts usually have chloroplasts.Photosynthesis occurs there.

Watch out: Not every cell has a nucleus. Bacteria lack a membrane-bound nucleus, and not all plant cells have chloroplasts.

Goal, prerequisites and card origin

What you will learn: Match cell structures with their basic functions.

What you need first: Distinguish a living organism from a non-living object.
