The equals sign means “has the same value”
Equals is not an instruction to write the answer next. It states that the left and right sides have the same value.
| Expression | Value | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 7 + 2 | 9 | same value |
| 6 + 3 | 9 | same value |
| 9 − 2 | 7 | on both sides |
One worked example
- 7 + 2 = 6 + 3Both sides contain calculations.
- 9 = 9Both sides equal nine, so the statement is true.
- 7 + 2 − 2 = 6 + 3 − 2Subtracting two from both sides lowers both values to seven.
Watch out: The chain 2 + 3 = 5 + 4 = 9 is false: the first expression is 5, the middle one is 9. Use separate calculations.
