Fractions: how big are the pieces, and how many?
The denominator underneath tells you how many equal parts make one whole. The numerator above tells you how many of those parts you take.
| Whole divided into | Selected | Fraction |
|---|---|---|
| 4 equal parts | 1 part | 1/4 |
| 4 equal parts | 3 parts | 3/4 |
One worked example

- 3 × 1/4 = 3/4Three quarters means three pieces, each of size 1/4.
Watch out: The pieces must be equal in size. Counting three pieces is insufficient if they have different sizes.
