Area counts the squares inside
The length counts squares in each row, and the width counts rows. Multiplication gives the total number of unit squares.
| Row | Number | Row area |
|---|---|---|
| Row 1 | 4 squares | 4 cm² |
| Row 2 | 4 squares | 4 cm² |
| Row 3 | 4 squares | 4 cm² |
One worked example
- 4 × 1 cm² = 4 cm²One row contains four unit squares.
- 3 × 4 cm² = 12 cm²Three identical rows cover the whole rectangle.
- A = 4 cm × 3 cm = 12 cm²Multiply dimensions expressed in the same units.
Watch out: Use the same length units before multiplying. Area is measured in cm², not cm.
