A cuboid has three pairs of opposite faces
Volume stacks layers. The surface has two rectangles ab, two ac and two bc.
| Relation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| V = a × b × c | Multiply all three dimensions. |
| S = 2(ab + ac + bc) | Add three different face areas and double. |
| a = 2; b = 3; c = 4: V = 24; S = 52 | Units distinguish interior space from covering. |
One worked example
- V = a × b × cMultiply all three dimensions.
- S = 2(ab + ac + bc)Add three different face areas and double.
- a = 2; b = 3; c = 4: V = 24; S = 52Units distinguish interior space from covering.
Watch out: The surface formula assumes a closed cuboid with all six faces. An open box has fewer faces.
