Czech spelling after B: meaning chooses the word family
Pronunciation alone is not enough. Czech listed words and their derivatives use y/ý in the relevant root. First identify the meaning and word family.
| Meaning | Word family |
|---|---|
| exist, stay | být → byt, příbytek |
| strike, hit | bít → nabít míč |
| plant, herb | bylina → bylinka |
One worked example
- Chci b_t doma. → býtThe meaning is to be or stay at home, not to hit: use ý.
- Budu b_t do bubnu. → bítThis means striking a drum. This bít is not the listed word být.
- b_linkový čaj → bylinkovýThe tea is made from herbs. The word belongs with bylina.
Watch out: The lesson concerns Czech even in the English interface. Similar sound does not mean the same family: být (be) × bít (hit), bydlo (living/livelihood) × bidlo (pole). Check loanwords and proper names individually.
