Czech: commas around an inserted clause
Separate a subordinate clause from its governing clause. When inserted, it needs a boundary on both sides: „Kniha, kterou čtu, je napínavá.“ Remove the insertion temporarily: „Kniha je napínavá“.
| Example | Reasoning |
|---|---|
| Kniha je napínavá. | First identify the main-clause frame. |
| Kniha, kterou čtu, je napínavá. | The insertion kterou čtu has a comma at its start and end. |
One worked example
- Kniha je napínavá.First identify the main-clause frame.
- Kniha, kterou čtu, je napínavá.The insertion kterou čtu has a comma at its start and end.
Watch out: Not every a requires a comma and not every pause is a clause boundary. Determine structure first.
