Density: mass in the same volume
Density compares the mass of equal volumes. Twice as much of the same material has twice the mass and volume, so their ratio remains the same.
| Observation | What it means |
|---|---|
| 100 cm³, 200 g | 2 g/cm³ |
| 200 cm³, 400 g | 2 g/cm³ |
One worked example
- m = 150 g, V = 50 cm³The units set the density unit.
- ρ = 150/50Divide mass by volume.
- ρ = 3 g/cm³Each cm³ has average mass 3 g.
Watch out: Use consistent units; 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³.
