Why don’t we add the denominators?

Go straight to resources ↓

First make equal-sized pieces. Then count how many you have.

Equal wholes: one half is 3 sixths, one third is 2 sixths; together they make 5 sixths.
1/2
1/3
5/6

One worked example

  1. 1/2 + 1/3We need pieces of the same size.
  2. 3/6 + 2/6Rewrite both fractions in sixths.
  3. 5/6Add the number of sixths; their size stays the same.

Watch out: The bars must represent equal wholes. The common denominator need not be the product of the original denominators.
