Functions: one output for each input
A function rule assigns exactly one output to each allowed input.
| x | f(x) |
|---|---|
| 0 | 1 |
| 1 | 3 |
| 2 | 5 |
One worked example
- f(3) = 2 × 3 + 1Replace x in the rule with 3.
- f(3) = 7Multiply before adding.
Watch out: Different inputs may share an output. A function need not be a straight line or accept every real number.
