From gene to protein: copying is not translation
Transcription makes RNA using DNA as a template. During translation a ribosome reads three-nucleotide mRNA codons and assembles amino acids. DNA does not turn into protein; it is an information template.
| Observation | What it means |
|---|---|
| DNA → RNA | transcription |
| mRNA → amino-acid chain | translation |
One worked example
- Gene in DNAInformation is stored.
- mRNA is madeA working RNA copy is produced.
- A ribosome reads mRNACodons guide polypeptide assembly.
Watch out: Not every gene codes for protein. Eukaryotic primary RNA is often processed before translation.
