PEAZIT Aha card

Equations: keep both sides equal

Go straight to resources ↓

Apply the same valid operation to both sides.

The two pans of a balance represent the two sides.
Left sideOperation on both sidesRight side
2x + 3−311
2x÷28
x=4

One worked example

  1. 2x + 3 = 11Each x represents the same unknown value.
  2. 2x = 8Subtract 3 from both sides.
  3. x = 4Divide both sides by the non-zero number 2.

Watch out: Division by zero is not allowed. Multiplying by zero loses information. Real weights do not model negative values literally.

Goal, prerequisites and card origin

What you will learn: Solve a simple linear equation and check the result.

What you need first: Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
