The mole: connect mass to particle count
A mole measures amount of substance. One mole contains exactly 6.02214076 × 10²³ specified entities. Molar mass M gives grams per mole; n = m/M.
| Observation | What it means |
|---|---|
| H₂O: M ≈ 18 g/mol | 18 g is 1 mol |
| H₂O: 36 g | 36/18 = 2 mol |
One worked example
- m = 9 g, M = 18 g/molUse the rounded molar mass of water.
- n = 9/18Divide mass by mass per mole.
- n = 0.5 molHalf the mass means half a mole.
Watch out: Specify the entities and use consistent mass units. The mole is not a mass unit.
Goal, prerequisites and card origin
What you will learn: Use n = m/M.
What you need first: Division and units.
