A prism stacks an unchanged base
Cross-sections parallel to a prism’s base have the same area as the base. Volume is base area times the perpendicular distance between the bases.
| Relation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| V = B × h | B denotes the whole base area. |
| B = 6 × 4 / 2 = 12 cm² | Calculate the triangle first. |
| V = 12 × 5 = 60 cm³ | Then stack it through the prism's height. |
One worked example
- V = B × hB denotes the whole base area.
- B = 6 × 4 / 2 = 12 cm²Calculate the triangle first.
- V = 12 × 5 = 60 cm³Then stack it through the prism's height.
Watch out: The triangle's height and the prism's height are different lengths. For an oblique prism, do not use a sloping edge as height.
Goal, prerequisites and card origin
